Syntactic parsing for information retrieval

Book ·
OSTI ID:5362938

This paper describes an application of the theory of syntactic processing developed by Moulton and Robinson (1981) to the processes of information retrieval. It first discusses the limits of present information retrieval theory (e.g. Mcgill et al., 1979), and the potential benefits of linguistic analysis for information retrieval. Next it briefly presents the Moulton and Robinson theory, compares it to rewrite rule based theories, particularly in terms of applications for information retrieval, and outlines its general advantages as an approach to natural language processing. Next it describes a parser based on the Moulton and Robinson theory, and some of the implementation issues addressed. Finally, it discusses possible future applications of this model to more general natural language parsing environments such as those of artificial intelligence. 5 references.
