Anaerobically digested sewage sludge from the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago was applied to an abandoned surface-mined tract in southern Illinois known as the Palzo site. Target application rates varied from 400 to 1000 metric tons per hectare. Sludge-amended spoil samples from the rhizosphere of thirty-six Acer saccharinum samples were tested for pHw, H/sup +/ ion content and metal elements (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn). The metal extractants (DTPA and 0.1 N HCl) were prepared under standard and adjusted pH conditions in order to simulate the average pH of Palzo spoils (pHw 4.9). Extractable spoil metal concentrations exceeded those reported in many related research projects and were partially due to the low pHw (4.9) and the reserve acidity present in the spoil medium. Correlations between the two metal extractants under standard and adjusted pH conditions indicated that aside from pH and chemical differences the extractions can become a function of the metal encountered.
