A device is described for treating oil shale comprising a vertical retort having an outer casing wall, an inner casing wall spaced from the outer casing and having openings therein communicating with the space between the walls. A number of floors within the inner casing are provided with openings forming compartments each of which communicates through the first openings with the space between the walls. A rotatable vertical shaft extends axially through the inner casing. An agitator device is attached to the shaft in each of the compartments. A chamber is provided for receiving heated gases between the walls around and opening into the lowest compartment. Pipes for conducting heated gases from the chamber to the other compartments, respectively, are provided.
