Uniform static magnetic field in Kaluza-Klein Theory

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5360035
In this paper the simplest non-trivial global solution of the Kaluza-Klein field equations is obtained. This solution describes a uniform static magnetic field. From an analysis of the global properties of this five-dimensional manifold, it is shown that Kaluza-Klein theory must possess a topologically richer structure than was previously thought. It is further noted that for a constant magnetic field the Kaluza theory becomes symmetric under charge creation and annihilation. This additional symmetry, which is a consequence of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, leads to a discrete value for the charge quantum that O. Klein had introduced as an additional hypothesis through his cylindricity condition.
