Frequency domain approach to structural analysis

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5357395
To conduct a forced vibration analysis, a mathematical model of the structure is first constructed. In this case, a single degree of freedom model (SDOF) is assumed. Solution of the model in the time domain using the impulse response and the fast Fourier transform methods are briefly described prior to introducing the frequency domain approach. The solution in the frequency domain, involving the eigenfunctions and transfer functions of the system, is then performed. The relationship between the time and frequency domain solutions is discussed, and the transfer function of a general structure is derived. The models can be analyzed in terms of displacement, velocity, or acceleration. Using the Fourier transform method, the response spectrum of a structural system may be determined. (LEW)
