In the interest of developing irradiation facilities for the fabrication of nuclear filters which are less costly and safer than the neutron-based facilities currently in use, the authors explore the possibility of using the bremsstrahlung beams produced in electron accelerators to generate fission fragments from the photofission of uranium and thorium targets. Data are tabulated on the dependence of the number of /sup 238/U and /sup 232/Th fission events on the maximum bremsstrahlung energy. The data make it possible to evaluate the rate of fission in the bremsstrahlung field. Specifications are given for beam and target parameters using an MT-22 microtron; comparative assessments are provided for neutron irradiation.
