Precision grinding of brittle materials: The ASPE 1996 topical meeting - summary and review

This presentation will differ from the usual technical format in that it will be primarily a summary and review of the highlights from the ASPE Spring Topical Meeting held June 3-6, 1996 at St. John`s College, Annapolis, MD. In that context, this will be a short (as opposed to extended) abstract. The theme of the meeting was Precision Grinding of Brittle Materials, a topic endemic to the precision engineering and manufacturing of a wide range of components. The meeting was organized with the aim of bringing together a representative group of participants from industry, national laboratories and academia. The sessions included issues related to machine design, grinding wheels, coolants, materials and the mechanics of the grinding process as manifest in chip geometry and material removal mechanisms. The rather sharply focused content of the meeting evoked numerous lively and sometimes controversial discussions on what is known, what is not known and what should be known about the grinding of brittle materials. A summary session led by K. L. Bladel helped put much of the technical detail into perspective. The meeting was successful in producing a better picture of where research stands in terms of a fundamental understanding of the grinding process as well as the ability to transfer this understanding into more deterministic manufacturing technology. Perhaps most interesting was the realization of the still fuzzy nature of the current state of knowledge in many important areas, even after many years of research by many investigators. That itself can be judged as an advance in that at workers are beginning to know better what they don`t know. The rest of the details will be filled in at the presentation.
