The SO/sub 3/ reaction was conducted in the 6 - 12 torr pressure range at 69/sup 0/C - 150/sup 0/C and the SO/sub 2/ reaction was conducted in the 7 - 22 torr range at 90/sup 0/C - 155/sup 0/C. Both of the reaction rates were faster than the reaction rate of O/sub 3/ in the presence of CO/sub 2/ alone. No evidence for a molecular reaction of O/sub 3/ with SO/sub 3/ was found and the faster rate is probably due to an impurity (HX) from the SO/sub 3/ reactant which gives rise to a chain reaction initiated by O/sub 3/ + HX ..-->.. OH + O/sub 2/ + X. Evidence was obtained for the direct association of SO/sub 2/ and atomic oxygen (/sup 3/P) to produce chemiluminescence in the higher temperature range leading to the formation of /sup 1/SO/sub 3/*.
