Perspectives for wood availability, utilization, and conversion are developed towards desirable government policies which encourage an increase in our forest growing stock, as well as a more efficient use of the harvestable resource. Several scenarios are then highlighted, which impact on the availability and use of wood for other than traditional markets. It is seen that major programs related to use of biomass for energy will impact on wood availability, and that policies concerning pricing and allocation of fossil fuels can create a market for wood fuel or create competition between wood and coal as fuels, with possible shifts in wood harvests.
