Ocean energy systems at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, April-June 1983. Quarterly report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5354205
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, is engaged in developing Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) systems that will provide synthetic fuels (e.g., methanol), energy-intensive products such as ammonia (for fertilizers and chemicals), and aluminum. The work also includes assessment and design concepts for hybrid plants, such as geo-thermal-OTEC (GEOTEC) plants. The Laboratory also has a technical advisory role with respect to DOE/DOET's management of the conceptual design activities of two industry teams who have been designing offshore OTEC pilot plants. Since the conceptual designs were completed, one of the teams, headed by Ocean Thermal Corporation, was selected to continue with preliminary design. In addition, the Laboratory is now taking part in a program to evaluate and test the Pneumatic Wave-Energy Conversion System (PWECS), an ocean-energy device consisting of a turbine that is air-driven as a result of wave action in a chamber.
