Measurement of 2-ND and 3-RD order vector and tensor spin observables in the reaction rvec p ( rvec d ,d) p at 1. 6 GeV deuteron beam energy
- UCLA, Los Angeles, CA 90024 (US)
Measurements of 17 previously unmeasured vector and tensor spin observables in the d-p elastic scattering reaction are reported. Of these, seven are spin correlation observables in the momentum transfer range 0.12{lt}{minus}t{lt}0.85 (GeV/c){sup 2} and ten are spin transfer observables in the range 0.20{lt}{minus}t{lt}0.85 (GeV/c){sup 2}. The measurements were performed at Saclay in July 1985 and March 1986. The vector and tensor polarized deuteron beam of Saturne II accelerator at 1.6 GeV or 800 MeV Equivalent Proton Beam Energy (EPBE), with an average vector polarization of {ital P}{sup {ital d}}{sub 0}=0.3 and an average tensor alignment of P{sub 0}=0.85 in conjunction with the NN experimental area frozen spin polarized proton target were utilized for these measurements. A brief discussion of the experimental setup and the data analysis is given. Some of the results are presented and compared to the predictions from relativistic multiple scattering models. It is shown that the standard Relativistic Impulse Approximation (RIA), when used with the on-mass-shell NN amplitudes, does not satisfactorily describe the p-d data. A multiple scattering approach using a modified form of the NN amplitudes to account for the off-mass-shell effects is shown to satisfactorily describe the p-d data.
