This patent describes a method for converting methane to higher hydrocarbon products and coproduct water. It comprises contacting a gas comprising methane and a gaseous oxidant with SiO{sub 2} at a temperature within the range of about 700{degrees} to 1200{degrees} C. in the presence of at least one gaseous promoter selected from the group consisting of halogens and compounds thereof, the contacting being conducted in the substantial absence of alkali metals and compounds thereof and in the substantial absence of reducible metal oxides.
