Test measures ERW line pipe weld ductility
Electric-resistance-welded (ERW) pipe is frequently used to transport natural gas. Although present manufacturing methods usually produce good-quality product, small weld-line discontinuities may occasionally be present. Improvements are constantly sought in pipe-manufacturing techniques to reduce the likelihood of these discontinuities. Improvements are also sought in weld-inspection techniques to increase the likelihood that any such discontinuities will be discovered. Another approach toward improving the reliability of ERW line pipe, one that has received less attention, is to increase the tolerance of the weld region to small weld-line discontinuities, that is, to improve the weld's ductility. This article describes the development of a test method for obtaining an accurate, quantitative measure of ductility of seam welds in ERW line pipe.
