A high degree of inheritance of resistance and susceptibility of sweet corn (leaves) to acute ozone injury under field conditions was shown during 2 and 3 generations of breeding with 3 series of cultivars. Crosses of highly susceptible X resistant inbreds gave notably susceptible F/sub 1/'s which segregated quantitatively over a wide range of injury levels in F/sub 2/. Resistant X resistant crosses gave nearly fully resistant progenies. A 2-generation study involving a second series of inbreds also showed close correlation between susceptibility in a parent and in related F/sub 1/'s. Three generations of selection combined with inbreeding, starting with a segregating population, resulted in nearly fixation for resistant sublines, but gave a continued wide range of segregation in progenies of susceptible selects.
