Title: Stand damage from whole-tree harvesting in Vermont hardwoods

Journal Article · · J. For.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5353575

An assessment of damage from 2 shelterwood fellings and 2 thinnings in broadleaved stands mixed with spruce (Bradley, D.; Stevens, D. (1978) wood for energy: an interim report on the whole-tree harvesting experiment in South Duxbury. Vermont Naturel Resources Council and Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. 40p.) Whole stems were removed by feller-buncher and grapple skidder, except for one thinning when trees were felled by chain saw and skidded with a cable skidder. Of the residual trees in each treatment 27-47% were damaged, with the greatest damage in the thinned area where felling was most intense. Skidding of the whole trees accounted for at least 68% of the wounds. (Refs. 5).
