Title: Process for making superconductors using barium hydroxide

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5353559

This patent describes a process for preparing a superconducting composition of the formula M{sub 1}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub x} wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Y, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu, and x is a numerical value in the range of about 6.5 to 7.0. It comprises forming a suspension by mixing barium hydroxide and M{sub 2}O{sub 3} with an aqueous solution of a cupric carboxylate or cupric nitrate at a temperature from about 50{degrees} C to about 100{degrees} C or mixing barium hydroxide with an aqueous solution of a cupric carboxylate or cupric nitrate and an M-carboxylate or M-nitrate at a temperature from about 50{degrees} C to about 100{degrees} C to obtain a suspension having M:Ba:Cu present in an atomic ratio of about 1:2:3; drying the suspension formed in step (a) to obtain a precursor; and heating the precursor in an oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature of about 850{degrees} C to about 950{degrees} C for a time sufficient to from M{sub 1}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub y} where y is from about 6.0 to about 6.4 and maintaining the M{sub 1}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub y} in an oxygen-containing atmosphere while cooling for a time sufficient to obtain M{sub 1}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub x}.
