Presently, the interest in semicrystalline thermoplastic polymers for applications as high performance materials is increasing. Polymides are being investigated for such a purpose. Semicrystalline polyimides offer advantages such as excellent solvent resistance and good thermooxidative stability, but for practical usage they must also be able to be adequately melt processed. In addition to the aforementioned properties, some semicrystalline polymides which are synthesized by solution methods exhibit small particle size. This aspect allows the polymers to be candidates for use as composite matrix materials which are fabricated by powder prepregging processes which require small-sized polymer particles. The purpose of this research then was to synthesize and subsequently characterize Polyimides that not only display semicrystallinity and die properties thereby associated, but also display reasonable melting behavior.
