The catalytic activity of Cu(II) chelates in the oxidation of cyclohexene increases when the configuration of the chelate entity is changed from planar square to distorted tetrahedral. The nature of the ligands in the molecule of the catalyst does not influence the composition and proportions of the oxidation products. One of the catalytic functions of Cu(II) chelates in the reaction studied is the initiation of oxidation as a result of the acceleration of the decomposition of 2-cyclohexenl-1-y1 hydroperoxide. It was shown that it is possible in principle to use optically active Cu(II) chelates to effect asymmetric oxidation with oxygen.
