A large number of diverse size reduction machines is currently available for the comminution of waste materials. Equipment selection is determined by the nature of the material to be treated and by its behavior under external mechanical stressing. Accordingly, wastes can be divided into those with elastic/brittle and those with ductile/viscous behavior. The scientific understanding of the comminution of wastes is lagging strongly as compared to that of the grain-shaped mineral raw materials. Only in a few unique cases have the fundamentals of the comminution of ductile or viscous materials been presented. The paper centers on a characterization and systematic analysis of the types of stress fundamental to comminution. On the basis of this discussion an overview is presented of the currently available technologies for the comminution of wastes, with attention centering on those machines designed for materials with ductile or viscous behavior.
