Studies of new potential sources of rhenium are urgently needed, in view of the increasing demand for this metal in various branches of industry. Hence there is interest in investigating certain natural objects that are not currently regarded as possible raw materials because of their low contents of rhenium, since these materials may be of interest in the future if multipurpose processing techniques can be developed. Some information has been reported previously on the relatively high concentrations of rhenium in oil shales and dictyonemous shales of Estonia. Analytical results were reported on a few individual specimens of these shales. Since oil shale processing is now a firmly establised industry, and dictyonemous shales are of potential interest as a mineral raw material, we have carried out a study of the distribution of rhenium in these minerals and products obtained by processing the shales.
