The treatment of cellulose (I) with HF for 40 min at -5 degrees followed by precipitation with Et20 gas H20-solution product, Carbon 13 NMR spectrum of which showed the presence of mainly beta-(1 to 4) linked D-glucopyranosyl residues, together with low proportion of alpha- and beta-anomers of D-glucose groups. A similar spectrum was obtained with 10% I solution in HF after 30 min standing at -20 degrees, indicating that the polysaccharides are partially degraded at this temperature. Evaporation of HF from I solution left a residue which contains trace of glucosyl fluoride (II) and consists of a mixture of oligosaccharides solution in H2O. Treatment of amylose (III) with HF gave the same products as those obtained from I, and (1 to 4)-beta-D-xylan and D-xylose behaved similarly, except only traces of II can be detected whatever the temperature and reaction conditions, indicating that I and III are initially converted into alpha-D-glucopyranosyl fluoride when treated with HF. In the treatment of Betula verrucosa with HF, solubilization of the carbohydrates was almost quantitative and proceeded rapidily (30 min, room temperature). The lignin ester and ether linkages in wood were possibly not cleaved by the action of HF, but extensive temperature and reaction time-dependent condensation with carbohydrates occurred.
