One of the most essential ingredients in a whole body counting program is attention to detail. At Georgia Power Company's Plant E. I. Hatch, an upgrade program was implemented to improve reliability, dependability, and accuracy by watching the details associated with operating the plant's two eight-year-old whole body counting systems. This article describes the elements of the upgrade program, which included analysis of the reproducibility of calibration geometries, verification of performance with source cross-checks and weekly source checks, software review and documentation, radionuclide library verification, cross talk analysis, evaluation of facility environmental factors, hardware spare parts inventory, and development of a tracking and trending system. Examples of daily parameter trend plots and system calibration logsheets are also presented.
