Motion of damped sine-Gordon kinks in the presence of thermal fluctuations

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5348491

This thesis deals with the damped sine-Gordon kink motion under the influence of external applied and thermal torques. Chapter I introduces the basic concepts and historical development for this research. Chapter II considers the motion of a damped sine-Gordon kink under the influence of an external applied torque. This problem is solved for any dampling using singular perturbation theory. Chapter III considers damped sine-Gordon kink under an external applied torque and also in the presence of the complication of thermal fluctuations. This problem is solved also for any damping using singular perturbation theory. Chapter IV presents the results and conclusions. The change in the shape of a kink or an antikink caused by thermal fluctuations is evaluated, finding that the kink somewhat flattens, increasing its width. The effect of an increase in the temperature on the average velocity of a kink or an antikink is to increase the velocity.
