Feasibility of woody biomass plantations

Journal Article · · BioCycle; (United States)

The woody biomass plantation research program of the University of Illinois, begun in the spring of 1977, is discussed. Establishment and maintenance requirements, species selection criteria, production potential, environmental and site impacts and energy budget evaluation are all under scrutiny. The relationship between spacing and rotation length is an important variable in short rotation intensive culture systems. A key element in energy budget analysis is the input from manufactured fertilizer, and consequently research in using municipal sludge as a soil amendment has been undertaken. In addition, work was initiated to study prudent research directions in bioenergy through the use of an economic evaluation system.
