A maintenance ALARA planning flowchart

For some years now, Duke Power Company has been working to incorporate exposure control considerations into its maintenance planning. THe ultimate intent is to make shutdown maintenance planners primarily responsible or ALARA planning down to the job level, rather than Health Physics. The reason--improvements in the efficiency of shutdown maintenance and hence capacity factors can only come from complete and effective planning, including ALARA. This paper reports that as one step in this direction, the Maintenance ALARA Planning Flowchart was prepared and issued in February 1988. This flowchart will allow planners to prepare job packages that include the HP/ALARA aspects for all radiation work. Planners enter the Maintenance Flowchart for all radiation work during the initial planning stage.
