Development of a tubular LiA1/FeS cell battery

The tubular LiA1/FeS battery currently being developed at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Seoul, Korea, contains cells with central cylindrical LiA1 negative electrodes and surrounding annular FeS positive electrodes separated by a layer of MgO powder containing LiC1-KC1 electrolyte. A new method of MgO powder separator fabrication, developed at KAIST, provides a separator that does not require vacuum filling and that is free of voids. This method eliminates problems previously associated with the vibratory-filling and pressing methods of MgO powder separator production. A series of multielectrode cylindrical cells have been built and tested. This cell structure, which provides a large electrode area per unit volume of active material, shows promise of high power density.
