In this paper the polarization of proton-electron bremsstrahlung is studied. The differential cross sections for the emitted photon with linear polarization are obtained by Lorentz transformation of the well-known electron-proton bremsstrahlung. Appreciable polarization occurs near both the low- and high-energy ends of the photon spectrum. It is also shown that the maximum polarization is obtained in the direction perpendicular to the particle trajectory for low-energy photons, the bremsstrahlung in this case being like dipole emission. The resulting polarization from a proton spectrum in a thick target is also given. The degree and direction of the polarization of solar flare X-rays are predicted from the model (spiraling protons in the solar magnetic field). These results are discussed in connection with previously measured values. 37 references.
