Origin of dwarf galaxies

A new mechanism is proposed for producing vigorous bursts of star formation in metal-poor dwarf galaxies, at the present epoch. The intergalactic medium is heated and enriched by winds from dwarf galaxies at high redshift. This gas is compressed when galaxy groups form at the present epoch, and it cools and accretes onto slowly moving dwarf ellipticals. Several observable properties of the resulting gas-rich dwarfs, including the metallicities and the spatial distribution, are described. 64 references.
