The temporal characteristics of the light emission from XeI* B(1/2) state was studied following electron beam excitation of mixtures of Xe and CF/sub 3/I. Two processes were found to be responsible for the formation of the exciplex: (1) a nonionic sequence involving electronically excited states of xenon and ground state CF/sub 3/I; (2) an ionic sequence with the main step probably being Xe/sub 2//sup +/ + I ..-->.. XeI* + Xe. The deactivation rate constant of XeI* by CF/sub 3/I obtained from emission simulation results was determined to be 5 +- 1 x 10/sup 11/ M/sup -1/ s/sup -1/.
