A directly linked gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared/mass spectrometry (GC/FT-IR/MS) system was constructed and evaluated for its capability to provide rapid, on-line identification and compound class confirmations. The validity of the forward on-line library search results for each detector was evaluated with 50 organic standards. From the standard solution experience, forward search criteria were proposed for rapid GC/FT-IR/MS identification and compound class screening. Six complex environmental extracts were analyzed with this system leading to 20 confirmed identifications and 24 confirmed compound class assignments. Since 106 analytes were jointly detected, this meant that 41% of the joint detections resulted in confirmed structural information. As independent detectors, each provided approximately the same amount of tentative structural information.
