Hydrodesulfurization process with catalysts whose pore sizes are concentrated in a narrow range

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5343433
A process for the hydrodesulfurization of a crude oil, a reduced crude oil, or a heavy gas oil employing catalysts with a high proportion of pores in a narrow range of relatively large pore sizes is described. An advantage of concentrating a high proportion of the total pore volume of the catalyst in a narrow pore size range is the avoidance of an excessive pore volume. The process consists of passing the oil along with hydrogen over a catalyst consisting of at least one Group VI metal and at least one Group VIII metal on alumina. The catalyst pore volume is at least 0.40 cc/g. At least 65 percent of the pore volume is within the size range of 40 to 90 A, as determined by isothermal liquid nitrogen desorption measurement.
