Treated municipal sludges were used to revegetate barren mined land in both the bituminous and anthracite coal mining regions of Pennsylvania. Types of sludges used in the projects were (1) liquid digested sludge, (2) dewatered by centrifuge, vacuum filter, and sand bed drying, (3) heat dried, and, (4) composted with wood chips. Application rates varied with the type and quality of sludge. Extensive monitoring and sampling were conducted at each site to determine the effects of the sludge applications on the soil, vegetation, and groundwater. These demonstrations are part of a cooperative program in the Commonwealth to introduce the concept of using municipal sludges for the reclamation of mined land. These projects helped to pave the way for large-scale practical applications now underway in Pennsylvania.
