We present results for heavy-light decay constants, using both propagating quarks and the static approximation, in [ital O]([ital a])-improved, quenched lattice QCD. At [beta]=6.2 on a 24[sup 3][times]48 lattice we find [ital f][sub [ital D]]=185[sub [minus]3][sup +4](stat) [sub [minus]7][sup +42](syst) MeV, [ital f][sub [ital B]]=160[sub [minus]6[minus]19][sup +6+53] MeV, [ital f][sub [ital D][ital s]]/[ital f][sub [ital D]]=1.18[sub [minus]2][sup +2], and [ital f][sub [ital B][ital s]]/[ital f][sub [ital B]]=1.22[sub [minus]3][sup +4], in good agreement with earlier studies. From the static theory we obtain [ital f][sub [ital B]][sup stat]=253[sub [minus]15][sup +16] [sub [minus]15][sup +105] MeV. We also present results from a simulation at [beta]=6.0 on a 16[sup 3][times]48 lattice, which are consistent with those at [beta]=6.2. In order to study the effects of improvement, we present a direct comparison of the results using both the Wilson and the improved action at [beta]=6.0.
