Experimental study of sound generation by modulated electrical discharge within a flame

The acoustical characteristics of a pulsating arc discharge within a flame were examined with a view of its possible use as a diagnostic probe for predicting acoustic instabilities in combustion chambers. The sound output from the probe was found to be controllable by the electrical input to the discharge and largely independent of the nature of the flame and the electrode separation. An example of the use of the probe in determining the Q of a model chamber is also described. 7 refs.
