X-ray observations of IRAS selected Seyfert galaxies and obscuration of the broad-line region
The IR, optical emission-line, and X-ray properties of four IRAS selected Seyfert galaxies are compared with those of a hard X-ray sample of AGN. For three of the four galaxies the properties are consistent with the objects in the X-ray sample. The anomalous IRAS Seyfert appears to be about 10 times underluminous in hard X-rays. Using a new method involving correlations between Balmer decrement and L(X)/H-beta it is shown that the average reddening law appropriate to the hard X-ray sample of AGN is similar to that measured in the Galaxy. By deriving an average intrinsic ratio of L(X)/H-beta, the average unreddened H-alpha to H-beta ratio in the broad-line region is measured to be 3.5. 29 references.
