This article briefly examines the materials technology for development of photovoltaic cell arrays for application to satellites. Topics addressed include operating conditions, efficiency, materials (silicon, gallium arsenide), costs, service life, power density, concentrator cells, tandem cells, development of 24 kW solar arrays for space station Freedom, and composite substrate materials.
