Chemical beneficiation of shale kerogen

Conference · · American Chemical Society, Division of Petroleum Chemistry, Preprints; (USA)

By aqueous caustic digestion of oil shale at 150 to 165{degree}C followed by acid extraction, as much as 95% of the mineral matter can be removed from raw shale without appreciably altering the kerogen from its virgin state. The low ash of the concentrate permits it to be hydroliquefied catalytically to a stable oil moderate nitrogen content. This paper describes bench scale results of beneficiation of Green River shale using this caustic-acid method and some properties of the concentrated kerogen.
