Correlation of the tangential stresses in the lithosphere of Venus with surface structures

The stresses in the lithosphere of Venus have been calculated with allowance for the correlation of its gravitational field and topography. A correlation of the distribution of the maximum tangential stresses with the planet's topography has been discovered. The largest stresses act under Ishtar Terra in the region of Maxwell Montes (approx. 300 bar). Stresses from 100 to 150 bar act under Aphrodite Terra, where they are concentrated under Ovda Regio and Phetida Regio on the west and under Atla Regio on the east. Under the plains, the stresses vary within broad limits from approx. 100 to approx. 20 bar. It has been discovered that the stresses seep through from the lithosphere into the mantle under Beta Regio (Theia Mons), Atla Regio, and Tethus Regio, which is evidently connected with the youth of the indicated formations. The distribution of the maximum tangential stresses in the mantle of Venus has been investigated qualitatively for the second spherical harmonic (n = 2).
