TVA's two-stage dilute acid hydrolysis pilot plant

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5338515
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Muscle Shoals, Alabama, began a research project in late 1980 to produce ethanol from hardwoods. In 1984, TVA began construction of a pilot plant which is capable of processing two tons per day of hardwood chips on a dry weight basis. This pilot plant was engineered from TVA bench-scale studies and Forest Products Laboratory research at Madison, Wisconsin. This basic research was supplemented by knowledge of commercially practiced technology. The purpose of this project is to define a commercially viable process for converting hardwoods or other biomass, such as agricultural residues, to ethanol.
