Solid-state NMR tracer experiments of synthetically prepared (/sup 13/C)lignins coalified under simulated geological conditions have illuminated a general chemical scheme for coalification. The labeling studies provide the first direct evidence for the conversion of aliphatic structures into aromatic structures during coalification. 5 refs., 2 figs.
