Radiation-optical processes in. cap alpha. Al/sub 2/ O/sub 3/:Ti:Cr and. cap alpha. Al/sub 2/ O/sub 3/:V:Cr crystals

Studies were made of two series of rubies with a variable concentration of chromium and with certain numbers of titanium and vanadium impurities. The concentration series of ruby with titanium had a nominal concentration of 0.05% by mass of the impurity, and the series with vanadium, 0.1% by mass. The results obtained indicate that with the concentration employed, Ti and V impurities participate in interband electron-hole processes, whereas the charge exchange between Cr traps does not involve bands. This confirms the existence of a jump-like migration of holes in high concentration ruby.
