Experimental work and analyses for copper as a candidate waste package container material are summarized for Fiscal Years 1985 and 1986, for the Basalt Waste Isolation Project. The objective was to assess the feasibility of copper as a container material, in support of the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management report to Congress on the same topic. The conclusion was that copper appears feasible as a container material, based on current knowledge. Additional studies and experimental work will be necessary to conclusively demonstrate feasibility. 45 refs., 39 figs., 26 tabs.
