Selecting cover-soil for use in surface mine reclamation in east Texas

Conference · · Univ. Ky., Off. Eng. Serv., (Bull.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5336611
The surface soils overlying the lignite deposits in east-central Texas consist of fine sandy loams or loamy sands. These are generally underlain by nutrient-deficient subsoils that limit root penetration and water availability. Slightly acid to mildly alkaline overburden strata containing clay and loamy materials are available in these lignite fields and could be used as cover-soil during post-mining soil construction. The objective of this study is to identify suitable overburden strata that can be used as an alternative to surface soils with low productivity.
