In 1979, for the first time since the 1974 to 1975 recession, industrial production grew faster abroad than in the United States. The composite index of industrial output for Europe, Canada, and Japan increased 5.8% over its 1978 level while US industrial production rose 4.2%. A short analysis of industrial performance for each country (Japan, Italy, Germany, Canada, France, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands), as well as for the United States, bears this out. Indices of industrial production for the countries are presented monthy for 1979, quarterly for 1978, and yearly for the period 1976 through 1979. 1 table. (SAC)
