This patent describes a process for adding halogen and an aryl group to the double bond of an olefin by reacting an arylamine with the olefin in the presence of an alkyl nitrite, a copper catalyst, and an inert polar organic solvent. The improvement described here comprises conducting the reaction in the presence of at least one equivalent of a hydrogen halide and employing as the catalyst a catalytic amount of a copper catalyst having the copper in an oxidation state below +2.
