Investigation of a phase transition in HfV/sub 2/D/sub 4/

The neutron diffraction method was used to show that HfV/sub 2/D/sub 4/ is a disordered solid solution in which the deuterium atoms occupy two tetrahedral interstices in the cubic lattice of HfV/sub 2/ and that there is a short-range order of the blocking type in the relative positions of the interstitial atoms. Below 278 /sup 0/K there is an order--disorder transition producing a superstructure (space group I4/sub 1//a) and this transition is characterized by a considerable hysteresis.
