Di-t-butyl peroxide as a diesel fuel additive

Journal Article · · CHEMTECH

Increasing the cetane number by adding a chemical cetane improvement additive is a cost-effective way to produce cleaner burning diesel fuels. DTBP, a peroxide-based cetane improvement additive, can be very effective as a cetane improver. It can be synthesized cheaply by reacting isobutylene with t-butyl hydroperoxide, and its performance is comparable to that of EHN, the cetane improver currently used commercially. DTBP potentially can reduce NO{sub x} emissions more than the nitrate data comparable cetane level. The additive is thermally and oxidatively stable in diesel fuels at typical fuel systems temperatures.
