The morphology of ruthenium catalysts, prepared from Ru-acetylacetonate (Ru(acac)/sub 3/) as precursor on ..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ at 1.16 wt% of Ru, has been studied by EXAFS, XPS, and oxygen chemisorption techniques. Ru(acac)/sub 3/-impregnated ..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ has been variously reduced with hydrogen at 200, 300, or 400/sup 0/C for 4 or 8 h. All samples treated at 200/sup 0/C show incomplete Ru reduction while for the sample treated at 300/sup 0/C for 4 h the formation of Ru clusters is essentially complete and no further modifications are observed for longer reduction times or higher temperatures. Ru is anchored to the support probably through Ru/sup n+/-O bonds. Ru(acac)/sub 3/ is therefore a useful precursor for obtaining Ru catalysts without contaminants in contrast with the behavior of Ru salts containing chlorine
