A high-performance Fe-Nd-B permanent magnet containing a fine dispersion of hafnium diboride (HfB/sub 2/) was produced by melt spinning and hot extrusion. The melt-spun filaments of Fe-Nd-B base alloys were hot extruded at 1000 /sup 0/C into 100% dense bar-shaped magnets with an energy product of 16 MGOe. Magnetic properties of the hot extruded bars were anisotropic with highest-energy product values achieved along the directions perpendicular to the extrusion axis. Improved properties were achieved in magnets containing ultrafine Fe-Nd-B grains stabilized by HfB/sub 2/ dispersions. A symptom of crystallographic texture was observed in the extruded magnets.
