This patent describes an internal combustion engine with a sequential operating cycle. It comprises a cylinder; a piston reciprocal in the cylinder; at least one intake port for admitting air into the cylinder in combination with at least one exhaust/intake port for exhausting combustion gases from the cylinder and admitting additional air into the cylinder; and, a rotary commutator valve system including: at least one rotary commutator valve arranged in the engine proximate the exhaust/intake port, the commutator valve having an exhaust passage, an air intake passage, a common exhaust/intake passage that is connected to the exhaust/intake port, and a rotor having a bypass means for selectively and sequentially connecting the exhaust passage and the intake passage to the common exhaust intake passage on rotation of the rotor.
